Our Minister of Health

I have nothing against garlic -- for taste and for vampires. However, I would love any comrade reading this to tell me where Manto Tsbalala-Msimang obtained her medical degree? With dates and details of university, please? Did she ever practise medicine? As she seems to be targeting doctors (which we desperately need) in order to make life impossible for them and drive them out of the country, it seems impossible that she herself could be a medical doctor.

I know that she qualified in cuba. I had a colleage that qualified with her

Thanks, Ian. Then it seems rather unbelievable that she could make such fatuous remarks and pass such impossible regulations. (Oh well, Third World, hold out your arms, we're sinking into you).

What is this medicine problem (since yesterday 2004-5-3) that medical aid or cash patients are not allowed discounts on medicine anymore and now has to pay extra?? I am sure I heard Manto bragging about medicine getting CHEAPER!!! We are going in the wrong direction.

Leea, you're far too kind, 'fatuous remarks' - I've family in the UK in the medical profession and our Minister of Health is an absolute laughing stock in Europe (and elsewhere I dare say!)

Lets face it, her stance on AIDS (and that of the government) is absolutely disgraceful. She and her buddy, Ivy ....? (who has completely mis-managed the communications portfolio) have done nothing for anyone in this country.

Surprised Pres. Mbeki actually let her back in!

Dad i've got to disagree with you about Ivy. I think she is doing Ok on the comms side. I did some work with Telkom and they want competition. They were telling me that nobody want the job. To be the SNO is a huge undertaking and it is not as simple as it seems. The SNO must provide service to rural as well as urban. They could used fixed lined wireless, but the technology needs to be improved slightly

When Ivy took over the job she told a confrence that i was at that she knew nothing about comms and spent time learning the ropes. She has made the changes slowly but surely to ensure that it is done properly.

We are getting 3G technology in the wireless environs now. I know that it seems slow but Ivy want the correct infrastructure to be there to ensure that the whole country gets comms.

I have heard that there are some really cool plans in place in her department with reagard to the ICT sector and she seems cautious

If all of you were coming with suggestions on how to improve our health care yes ,I would give a voice of confidence on that but you are bashing her for being a Minister of health. Who are you to charge her credentials i dont think our President would reappoint her if she was not capable of handling that post Bad los@rs .

The whole point is that we are entitled to our opinions without being bashed over the head by somebody with a different opinion or getting personal about it. This is an open forum here and not one to use for your personal abuse or derogatory comments about people from another country who help maintain the economy of this country.

Well said Ang, I 2nd that........ I was taught that if you don't have something nice to say, then keep quite. So Mzekezeke, down boy, don't be so aggressive, keep your cool, it is a mere discussion.

No......seriously.......
Can anyone explain this cost of medicines issue in *** terms please?

I used to Pay R20-00 for a pack of tabs and yesterday the same tabs & quantity cost over R40-00.

The pharmacists excuse was he is not allowed to give any discounts anymore.

So how is it that we were told medicine prices would come down after this intervention by the Honourable Minister of Health.?

It would depend on whether you are buying over the counter meds or prescription meds. The chemist I go to offers 30% discount on all prescription meds for cash payment but over the counter meds get no discount. Most chemists I know of offer 20% cash discount for prescriptions. Maybe the cheaper meds are handed out at state hospitals or something.

With regards to the price of meds having gone up - it's true that pharmacists are not allowed to offer discounts anymore. And at the moment they are still busy getting rid of their "old" stock - stock that was bought at the old prices - which they still have to sell at the old prices if they want to make any money in the next month or so.
Apparently once all that stock is gone and they start getting the new stock at the new prices, things will be different - hopefully!

It does amaze that the same govt which in so many ways are truly competent (look at the polically mature way they diffused the IFP issue which could so easily have taken this country over the abyss), mess up the health system. The hardest hit are the poor (mostly black people) )as they cannot afford decent medical care (and the govt with their meddling is only driving prices UP). It is as if the govt does not care about those who voted for it. I can only imagine HF Verwoerd smiling from the grave as the AIDS death toll mounts.

Oh dear Mzekezeke, I'm staying, sorry hey! Love this country too much! :-)

The government, in general, is doing a great job when you consider the challenges it has to face, I take my hat off. BUT - I haven't heard the MoH say anything that lends credibility to her position. When a senior minister (and Health is one damned important) makes statements here, or overseas that run from ridiculous (on AIDS) to highly unpopular (student doctor training) it makes the whole country look bad.

That isn't good governance!

Now if it was Mr. T. Manuel - hey, he'd get my vote ;-)

Let's get this thing straight. There are two sectors that are influenced by the new law:
1. Pharmacies and
2. Suppliers/Manufacturers of Meds
Pharmacies are not allowed to give discounts anymore on medicine (Against competition Act?). On medicine without prescription costing less than R100 they are allowed to put a dispensing fee of 16% on the product (Schedule 1 and 2) with a maximum of R16.
On medicine with prescription costing less than R100 they are allowed to put a dispensing fee of 26% on the product (Schedule 1 and 2 on Prescription and Schedule 3 to 8) with a maximum of R26.

Suppliers/Manufacturers supply the medicine at the same price to all pharmacies. The price it is supposed to be sold at, can appear on the bottle now (Remember the Chomps with the 10c and 20c written on it). This law is not in place yet and therefore the problem. These companies have a month to supply the dir-genl with a schedule of the prices of the meds.

So the problem is that they have to sell the products at the book-price (list of medicines with prices as supplied by the pharmaceutical board), thus Panado 100's normally sold at R24 (including discount) are being sold at R65 (book + 16%)

Continue...
Once the single exit price has been determined, the costs will drop in medicines at the pharmacies. But that will have to wait until August when the law is active on the Manufacturers/Suppliers. I hope that I explained it right and easy enough.

Mzekezeke,
If you really want me and my family to leave the country, then get 3 doctors to replace the ones lost by the move. It seems to me that it is very easy to support a minister if his/her dicision doesn't have an influence on you. Unfortunatily it does have an influence on my family and I so in future when you make a remark, make sure you know what you are talking about (unlike the minister of health) and not just because you are emotional about the country that you faught for (that doesn't fight for you).
As for some of her laws:
1. Doctors need to obtain a license to practice in a certain area - Problem: According to constitution you have the right to work in the area where you want to. She is busy pushing more doctors out. Do you realise that my wife has to work every 3rd day a 28 hour shift as there are a shortage of doctors?
2. Dispensing doctors must complete a course to be able to have a dispensing license. Problem: In rural areas the dispensing doctor is normally the only source of medicine and therefor the poor people won't have access to medicine - Constitution says that everyone has the right to Health Care.
... to be continued ...

So as you can see, her laws doesn't have an influence on you, having whatever job you do somewhere in the city, as you go to a private doctor and hospital and your medical aid pays for your meds. Get your facts right before trying to support something you don't know anything about.

BTW, sorry for the spelling mistakes in the previous posting:
therefor = therefore, unfortunatily = unfortunately, faught = fought, dicision = decision.

And to finish of with:

I am an African. I was born in Africa, speak a language that started in Africa, am a citizen of South Africa and I work my backside off to pay taxes. With any of those reasons we do have the right to criticise the Minister of Health.
