Eventually the "travelgate" saga is coming to a point with a couple of ANC parliamentarians found guilty and fined between forty and eighty thousand Rand each. The "stolen" money also has to be repaid. Strange how the ANC decided to appoint a special team to investigate the matter within their own ranks before making any recommendations to their executive committee. So much for Mbekis promise that any ANC member found to have stolen from "the people" will be dismissed, thrown out and discarded from the ANC ranks. This shows us that Mbeki cannot be taken seriously. This in spite of all the "nation building" efforts from government. Makes you wanna puke every time the "I woke up this morning" ad is played on TV. We haven't touched on Zimbabwe for some time where elections are looming once again. Nothing much has changed from the South African government point of view. The ANC sent an "official" delegation to oversee a "free and fair" election. Nothing has changed since the last lot. With international observers banned from the country and an independent (from the ANC) South African delegation being accused of siding with the opposition party it is already clear that the ANC delegation are acting under strict orders from Mbeki. "All is fine" they say - ja right! Mugabe is a sick man, turning his attentions to the remaining whites in that country. IOL reports the following - "Mugabe keeps talking about whites, about the British, about imaginary enemies and conspiracies because he has no answers for the problems created by his own government," said David Coltart, the MDC's secretary for legal affairs and one of four whites contesting the elections on an MDC ticket. Currently there are only about 50 000 whites in Zimbabwe out of a population of 14 million. "More than 150 000 whites fled Zimbabwe during the liberation struggle and after Mugabe's 1980 electoral victory, while some 40 000 others have emigrated in the last 20 years. Most of Zimbabwe's 4 500 white farmers lost their land and moved to big towns, seeking the security of numbers." We remember those days with great sadness even though it seems the world has largely forgotten what happened there. Is there a method behind Mbekis silence? Will the time come for us to leave this lovely country? Statistics show that more and more people are still leaving our sunny shores. Here things are a bit more subtle but nevertheless driving in the same direction. With affirmative action and black economic empowerment there are fewer and fewer jobs out there for the white male. As my grandfather said years ago, give the country to the black man and he won't rest until every white man rides a bicycle. Have a wonderful Easter and drive safely. | |
