First an amazing photo I got from a friend today (thanks Lara). To see the full size, right-click and save as.. The file is 785Kb at 1712 x 2288. No, I don't know who took it but I believe it was taken in the Kimberley (Australia) area.
Back to business. Yes, I did enjoy my trip to the UK tremendously. The most obvious thing that struck me was how green everything is. After that the fact that everything they call "anti-social" basically means it's against the law. When you consider things like Yobs (kids between the ages of 10 and 19 roaming the streets in groups of 8 or more at night and attacking innocent people for the sake of filming it on video mobiles in order to brag to their friends) then you can understand where the phrase come from. The same applies to reckless drivers. Anti-social also means that music downloads from the internet is punishable by law. Scores of parents are being sued by the phonographic organisation for songs downloaded by their teenage kids. In one case a mother is being sued for 4000 Pounds after her 14 year old daughter downloaded some 1 400 songs. Political correctness is also being pushed to the ridiculous. Farmers want the word 'couch potato' removed from the Oxford English Dictionary 'cause they reckon it suggests that potatoes are unhealthy. After three policemen faced disciplinary hearings which dragged on for years over the mispronunciation of Islamic words, one of them remarked that the phrase 'Core Blimey' will probably be outlawed next. And the police are under extreme scrutiny after failing (on several occasions) to respond to calls for help in domestic disputes. Julie Harris was killed by her ex-lover just hours after pleading with the police for help. She was stabbed 7 times while the 'cops' reckoned they had no-one available to deal with the boyfriend. In another case the police eventually caught up with the killer of another woman in Spain after he fled the UK. Another domestic fight that ended up in a tragic killing. For those of us who hate speed cameras, these things are painted yellow over there with clear road markings as well. That's over and above for the thousands of CCTV cameras mounted all over the place. And strict rules are applied when it comes to camera speeding fines. In a case brought to court it was found that there was insufficient lighting on a road in Lincolnshire where a speed camera was located. The 30 mph speed limit was not legally enforceable as the road was not lit at night. Does this make sense? Cameras must be visible, day and night. That's what the law says. How we wish for a law like that here at home!! Due to this case some 2,637 drivers will get a refund after being "caught" speeding by the offending device for which the police and local council will have to cough up. Plus of course all penalty points will be removed which naturally opens the gates to more court cases due to people that lost their licenses because of it. If you're on the limit (12 points system) and you break the speed limit (or rather, you get caught), your license will be revoked. Simple. Interesting enough is the fact that motorists are also getting a raw deal from service stations. Only four 'counties' scored top points in a survey out of 15 areas. 88 Cars were sent for servicing across the country with deliberate faults such as loose wheel nuts, low tyre pressures, incorrect fluid levels, blown fuses and defective lights. Only 21 were serviced correctly. Stricter legislation is now on the cards with some of these garages facing fines while others will be prosecuted. Here we thought that we're having a tough time financing the poor? A study showed that 13% of all earners in the UK pay 55% of the income tax. No matter what who says, there is still a major difference between a first world country and a place like South African. This place is run by amateurs like amateurs, no two ways about that. The ANC government can attend how many seminars and courses overseas, they'll just come back and stuff it up. At least they can do some shopping while they're over there.
