Good news this week is that a car hi-jacking gang responsible for a third of all car theft in Johannesburg, has been bust. The police did their job and built a profile on the crimes, the circumstances and the areas where these guys operated. About 35 gang members are behind lock and key - so very well done! Our local community police forum however revealed that serious crimes jumped 21% compared to the same period last year with hijackings 1% up. Other crimes were down and a boost to all is the fact that even though more break-ins were reported, less were successful. It shows that people have woken up to the fact that (even though it might cost a lot of money) getting an alarm system linked to a security company is the only way to safeguard your possessions. I have finally given in and admitted that my misguided ideas of safety in the suburbs can only last so long. A big fence is going up in front of my house and hopefully I'll be able to convince myself that I'm secure and safe in my little prison. I thought the days of burning trains were over, but I suppose "the people" have the need to demonstrate their disgust at poor service delivery. Some R5 million worth of damage was caused when commuters set a train alight after it arrived late. I understand their anger having to put up with this day after day and getting lip from the boss every time they're late for work. There are better ways of dealing with this, but to the un-educated masses (or limited at the most), this is a surefire way (pun intended) of ensuring that government gets the message. The cops I wrote about last week have been suspended pending further investigation. We'll see where that will lead us. And in a show of true democracy and non-racialism the SABC appointed six women in top positions. Unfortunately none were white. A true feat for the feminists and black empowerment. The "free to view" e-TV has my vote in any case winning my viewership with the biased reporting coming from the SABC. With the new firearm law in place people are rushing to comply with the new regulations. Some 20 000 applications for license renewals have been submitted since January this year. So far only about 4 000 have been processed with about 150 being refused. And the authorities claim that there's no backlog? Zimbabwe's fuel crisis is getting worse with emergency services coming to a standstill due to lack of diesel. Fuel is purchased from the black market with ridiculous prices being paid by old Bob. Harare has one fire engine with a quarter tank of fuel, and that's that. Fuel stations are dry for weeks on end and public transport is slowly but surely grinding to a halt. Independent bus operators have doubles their fees after Bob increased the fuel price by a 100%. A liter of fuel now cost close on R6.00. The Harare municipal council had their fuel allocation slashed from 30 000 liters to only 10 000. With the annual inflation rising 265% in July and deteriorating roads anyone can see that Mugabe's government don't have a clue with a dictator that has even less of a clue on how to revive this beautiful country. Shows you how one peanut brain can destroy his people and his country without loosing any sleep.
