So, finally it's happening. The demise of the Scorpions that is. If the ANC government has it's way, Jackie Selebi will be the man in charge of not only the SAPS (Police Services) but also all Metro Police.

Obviously the Scorpions have been doing such a good job that government is getting a bit nervous. Here you cannot bribe. Here there's no corruption whatsoever. Here case files don't go missing. Here they deal with criminals the way they should be dealt with. The idea is (or rather let's call it the "excuse") "to minimise tension and improve efficiency". Rather they should incorporate the SAPS and Metro Police with the Scorpions - much better idea as far as I'm concerned.

Good news story today on the radio - a man got robbed of his cash and mobile phone in some township. He went home, fetched his firearm and went back to the same spot where he got robbed minutes before. The brazen criminals (all three of them) decided that this man was an easy target before, so let's see what he wants to give us now. He drew his firearm, killing two robbers on the spot. The police let him go after he handed himself over with no immediate charges against him. Atta boy! I like it.

Had a similar case which let to the arrest of some robbers at a dam near my place of residence. A guy and his girlfriend were sitting in his car admiring the sunset when approached by this gang of robbers. After being robbed he threatened that he will go and fetch the police. So cock-sure of themselves they laughed him off and walked away. A couple of minutes later he returned with the cops whom promptly arrested the culprits. And all we can think is that thank heavens the victims did not get raped or killed. Shows you how accustomed we've become to crime in this beautiful country of ours.

And on the subject of crime. The Police released their crime statistics for 2004/05. According to the Star daily newspaper (Sept 22, 2005) increase in crime was reported on rape (4%), indecent assault (8%), drug-related crimes (33,5%), drunken driving (19,6%), truck hi-jacking (3,2%), cash in transit robberies (14,6%) and bank robberies (7,4%).

The "down" crimes were -

Murder (5,6%), attempted murder (18,8%), assault with intent (4,5%), motor vehicle & cycle theft (5,3%) and car hi-jacking by 9,9% to name but a few. These statistics are available from the police website or from your nearest police station.

At leats it seems like government is doing something about the rife corruption in our police services. Some 461 cops were suspended between April last year and March this year. 177 Cases involved corruption and 108 theft. We don't know how many of these were succesfully prosecuted though.

Disturbing fact is that 13 people per day got murdered in Kwa-Zulu Natal. That's a total of some 4 944 deaths compared to Gautengs' 3 611 and 2 680 for the Western Cape.

With government clamping down on crime statistics being released one can only speculate about how accurate these figures are.
