The ANC seems set on getting rid of the Scorpions as soon as possible. Who can blame them? In a recent story in the Mail & Guardian the reasons for this were clearly spelled out. It goes something like this - Six of the ANC national executive committee members are under investigation, two of these by the Scorpions. Then of course there's Jacob Zuma himself as well as Mbekis pal Jackie Selebi. These two cases will however not be affected by the demise of this elite unit. Even the speaker of parliament is pushing to meet the June deadline, and she's supposed to be impartial? True what Holomisa (UDM) is saying "Why, of all the pressing issues that face the nation, is the new ANC leadership obsessed with this one issue?" The DA has taken things one step further by getting conerned South Africans to sign an online petition. They've also stated their view and reason behind opposing the move. Read it online or get the PDF document here. Another hot potato for the ANC governing South Africa is of course the BBC story which was broadcasted last week. I downloaded the video clip but a quarter through I lost the sound so better watch it on the BBC site. Here is the transcript of the video. Direct confrontation is what it's all about. Something few of us in sunny S.A. can afford to do. This interview has probably done a lot of damage to the "tourist attraction" image our tourism board has been working on for so long to establish. Even more damage I would think to the trust international business has in this country. Someone had to tell the story as it is. George Bush has made a comment about Zimbabwe and again called on the S.A. government to stop their nonsense of silent diplomacy and help free the Zimbabwean people from mad Bob Mugabe. In a matter of three weeks two of my family members have been hi-jacked more than a thousand miles apart. Crime doesn't just happen in Jo'burg. It's a social desease that's killing our land.
