I was planning on doing much more than the usual bitching about the chaos our ruling party seems to be in. But not tonight. It's just become too much to take in or comment on.
What I can say is that the ANC is a party busy breaking apart. "Terror" Lekota (he of SADF fame) has written an open letter to the ANC pointing out the fact that the party is not actively pursuing what they set out to do. He bluntly told them to get their house in order or he is out.
A man of his stature within the ANC should not be taken lightly and the party knows this. Talks of a break-away party has again surfaced and this has shocked the true ANC supporters. After Mbeki was asked to resign there were whispers of this becoming a reality. The ANC has tried setting up talks with Lekota to discuss the issues he has with them, but the man is understandably skeptic on whether the party will really listen to him and if he'll be taken seriously.
After the Mbeki debacle and the ANC's protestations about the filing of papers in which Mbeki plans to defend himself in court regarding the Zuma corruption case, one can understand and clearly see the double standards the ANC has set for those loyal to Zuma and the rest of the party.
They have gone so far as to offer "amnesty" to those supporters who swore loyalty to Mbeki and joined in talks of a break-away party. That shows that they're worried, which might be a first for this once powerful all conquering organisation.
Even blubber mouth Julius Malema (ANC youth league) admitted that most of the ANCYL members will probably abstain from voting next year. And that's the general feeling amongst black people in South Africa. The problem is that they won't vote for another party, they won't vote at all. This means that the ANC will still win the general elections next year but obviously by a far lesser margin than in the past. Their outright majority will come to an end.
And if Lekota and kie register their own party, a lot of votes will go to them. Let's face it, the DA is the only alternative and do we really want them in power? Helen Zille is doing a sterling job for the DA in Cape Town and given more time might just do a decent job of running this country. Her priorities lies with the people and not destroying which took years to build.
The ANC is at least trying to score some brownie points with the minority. Here we're talking the predominantly white sport of rugby. Some years ago it was decided to incorporate our national flower (the Protea) with the world famous Springbok logo. Now sport administrators have decided that the "bok" must go. It's a logo of division they say. There's no proof that it binds the nation they say. It's an apartheid symbol they rant. Who'll forget the rugby world cup when Mandela was hoisted high after the "bokke" won it in the dying minutes of the game? Who'll forget the worried look on Mbekis' face when he celebrated victory after the last world cup? Who'll forget black brown and white joyously dancing the night away after both victories?
And the ANC says no, keep the Springbok in rugby. Ultimately it's not up to government and they know it. They made the statement purely so that they can wash their hands off this when the sport hotshots shoot it to make "biltong" and finally change the "bokke" chant to "blommetjie"(?)
